Experimental Narratives with Youthnet's Art Camp: Living Characters and Spatial Worlds

In collaboration with the St. Georges YouthNet, an organization that provides free programs to youth living near Uniacke Sqaure in the North End of Halifax, the CMML led two different workshops with a focus in experimental narratives.

For the first workshop, the participants created their own characters and then brought them to live by responding to a couple of prompts to give their characters a name, an action, and a place. Once all characters were created and uploaded into an immersive reality website, participants could see how all of their characters were actually interacting with each other.

For the second workshop, the CMML facilitators led a mixed-media camp where participants built a shared story world through handmade art, sculpture, drawing, sound, and digital implementation in Twine, a free, browser-based tool for making interactive stories and games with links between scenes. Over a week, the participants were able to create their characters from scratch while also learning new interdisciplinary and experimental ways to tell their own stories.
